The base oil market was in a general trend of surplus in 2017. Although there was a brief decline in the market supply due to the shutdowns of some plants under the pressure of environmental supervision, from the perspective of the overall demand and new production capacity, the trend of oversupply will continue in the base oil market.
From 2018 to 2021, the world will see an additional 4.25 million tons/year of base oil capacity. In 2018 alone, there will be a total of 2.9 million tons/year of new capacity launched, i.e., ExxonMobil’s 1 million tons/year Group II plant, Handi Sunshine’s 800,000 tons/year Group II/III plant, Dalian Hengli’s 700,000 tons/year Group II/III plant and Rosneft’s 400,000 tons/year Group II plant.
As China’s economic growth has slowed in recent years, the core industries with a high degree of correlation with the lubricants industry have been shrinking. The growth of lubricants market demand has become stable under the influence of industrial integration, the elimination of backward capacity and the extended oil drain intervals. China’s motor oil demand has slightly increased, but the overall growth slowed due to the decrease in demand for commercial vehicles. The industrial lubricants market will remain depressed for some time.
A nationwide environmental supervision was carried out on various industries in 2017, including the lubricants industry. A large number of small blending plants in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and Shandong were forced to shut down. As a result, the industry concentration significantly improved. We wonder if the customer resources of those closed blending plants be taken over smoothly by leading enterprises in 2018?
What will be the performance of the base oil demand in 2018? Will there be any change? Have the base oil suppliers found their new market direction? Can the environmental policy produce real benefits to major blending companies in different regions?
Shanghai Enmore will organize the 12th International Base Oil Summit 2018 in ShanDong JiNan , China during September 10th-12th, 2018. The conference is to attract more than 600 local and overseas market players in the base oil industry. We sincerely invite you to join us!
