As one of the six major synthetic materials which capture great attention globally, polyurethane has expanded rapidly in recent years. According to incomplete statistics, the global polyurethane products production has reached over 21 million tons, and expected to be 28.6 million tons in 2018, among which foam system and non-foam system products account for a half respectively. The huge potential growing market becomes more and more unneglectable.

The Asia-pacific region has become the largest polyurethane market in the world. In 2013, the demand for polyurethane products is 7.353 million tons. The number is expected to rise at a compound annual growth rate of 5.9%.  China is the biggest consumption nation in Asia-pacific region, where its demand makes up more than 25%. With strong domestic demand and great production capacity, China will witness further demand increase. At present, China is a manufacturing center of the five PU products: furniture, home appliances, synthetic leather, shoe and spandex. These five PU products annual consumption accounts for about 50% of the total consumption of PU products, which are the backbones of China textile industry, as well as main export commodities. In addition, apart from the stable increase of traditional synthetic leather, shoe sole and clothing market, the rapid development of car and medical industry has also stimulated a greater demand for polyurethane. Thus the growth of adhesive, coating, elastomer products will play a prominent role.

Although polyurethane industry in China has seen great domestic demand, it is still faced a lot of problems. For instance, the overcapacity of raw materials such as adipic acid, BDO, MEK, DMF is unavoidable; domestic demand and export growth is not enough to increase the low operation rate and consume the newly-built plants capacity; environmental protecting development requirement becomes more strictly ; bio-based , waterborne and slovent-free PU technology is still under development and unable to be  widely accepted by end-users due to high cost; readjustment of synthetic leather industry is undergoing; the growing labor cost promotes industry transition; the whole industry chain is under fierce competition etc. The polyurethane market in China is experiencing a new round of change.
