The development of BTX industrial chain is of great importance to industries like textile, chemical fiber and plastics. With the constant growth of downstream demand, China’s self-sufficiency of BTX products has been low. The problem of supply shortage still exists. Compared with the fast expanding downstream SM and CPL sectors, the growth of petroleum benzene supply is slow.
In 2016, China’s benzene inventory showed a down trend and the peak level was at a little over 100,000 tons. According to China Customs statistics, the import volume in 2016 was around 100,000 tons and the phenomena of stocking up was not apparent. In the second half, the market supply tightened as the arrival of some imported cargoes was delayed, the inventory once dropped to a record low of 30,000 tons or so. As a result, the domestic market prices soared to a historical high.
Two BTX facilities will be commissioned in the second half of 2017. Ningxia Baota Petrochemical’s BTX project and Hainan Refinery’s phase II BTX project will also be launched soon. Besides, some teapot refineries are planning to enter the BTX market. Will the Chinese BTX market face a serious surplus condition? Is it possible that the country will change from a net importer of BTX to a net exporter?
